All-Purpose Building
Post-Frame Commons Building Completes Quaker School Campus
Rose Magrann, head of Friends Academy of Westampton, describes the Academy’s 3-year-old Commons Building “as beautiful post-frame building that complements the other buildings on our campus.” It was the “final piece to our [campus] puzzle,” she says, providing an all-purpose facility that serves as a gymnasium, cafeteria, or auditorium. The building was named 2009 Building of the Year 2nd place winner in the Institutional category by NFBA.
Magrann explains that, since its founding in 1983, the Friends Academy held classes (kindergarten through 5th grade) in a small Methodist church. Nearly 20 years later, the Academy purchased land to expand the campus, and today the campus comprises four buildings. The Commons Building was completed in April 2009 after about 60 days of “smooth” construction during late-winter months, she says.Timothy Little of Little Construction Co., Inc., Mount Holly, NJ, notes that to blend in with existing campus buildings, the post-frame building has several unique features. “This structure is a 72 x 120 x 20-ft post-frame building with a 12-ft projection, 10-ft low-side plate height, 132-ft long single slope wraparound porch with a 24-ft turned gable front entrance overframe on the porch roof,” he says. “After interior fit-out, the building has a state-of-the-art sports/all-purpose-room floor, cafeteria area, large bathrooms, and scoreboards and basketball backboard system that hang from the roof-truss system.”
As for its design, Little adds that “A lot of emphasis was placed on the design and detail to achieve the owner’s desired finish product. The wraparound porch creates a very pleasant and inviting character to the building, and our custom-built cupolas serve as a final touch to make the building even more attractive.”For more information on post frame building & construction, contact Timothy Little at 609.261.6000 or e-mail littleconstruction@comcast.net.
