Diaphragm Design Assistance

Get help with the structural design of a post-frame building.

The National Frame Building Association (NFBA) created manuals with detailed descriptions and calculations required for diaphragm design when used with post-frame construction.

The key structural connections required to ensure continuous load paths to ground are identified and detailed procedures and calculations for designing each of the key connections are provided. Finally, the documents detail the lateral and longitudinal bracing requirements for the building system.

NFBA designed two seperate documents, one covering post-frame design for two different scenarios:

  • Lateral design wind loads exceed lateral design seismic loads
  • Lateral design seismic loads exceed lateral design wind load

Each manual includes technical information and tools covering the following items:

  • design loads
  • roof diaphragm panel in-plane shear strength and stiffness
  • shear wall panel in-plane shear strength and stiffness
  • the portion of the lateral wind load carried to ground by the post frame
  • How to use the DAFI Calculator
